Matthew Traub

Director, Head of Sustainability

As Head of Sustainability, Matthew leads a group of specialists who drive the practice’s environmental agenda at both a strategic level and through our project work. He has been at the heart of the practice’s sustainability initiatives, challenging design thinking to develop low-carbon, energy-efficient solutions and delivering some of our most environmentally progressive projects.

At a strategic level, Matthew has oversight of the practice’s decarbonisation strategy and environmental toolkit. He is responsible for updating the 2025 sustainability strategy and contributes to tailored research projects, such as work on Post-Occupancy Evaluation.

At a project level, Matthew brings a wealth of experience spanning both masterplanning and delivery. He has led several pioneering student accommodation projects, including Cranmer Road for King’s College, the first Passivhaus development in Cambridge, and Hinsley Lane for St John’s College, which is now the largest Passivhaus development in the city.

In addition, he has led the environmental response for a diverse array of other works. From decarbonisation-led institutional masterplans, such as the masterplan for Trinity College Dublin, to bespoke net-zero life science buildings like Plot 440 in Cambridge, as well as high-density, low-carbon, mixed-use regeneration projects.

Matthew studied at Sheffield University and worked for several practices in both the UK and Canada before returning to his home city in 2016 to take up a key role within the Cambridge team.
