As Specification Manager, you will be part of the practice's Technical Team and will work collaboratively with colleagues, project leaders and partners, to maintain a strategic overview of the methodology for the production of specifications and their content. In addition, you will produce project specification templates (practice bespoke specifications and project specific skeleton specifications, NBS Chorus baseline specifications and practice system masters) to support project teams in the production of specifications at key work stages (typically RIBA works stages 2, 3 and 4). Your role will include liaising and providing advice to Technical Directors and project teams and responding to technical queries.

You will have strong IT skills, an interest and understanding of technical design, project delivery and specification writing. Inquisitive and tenacious, you will make sound judgements and recommendations based on analytical rigour. You will be highly organised, detail-oriented and a natural planner with an enthusiasm to connect with the project teams and their work.

The primary focus of the position is to work with our design teams, consultants, and clients with guidance and targeted performance analysis to raise sustainability aspirations. There will also be opportunities to contribute to targeted research which will be linked to your skill set and interests. You will directly influence the performance of our projects and make a genuine contribution to our commitment to both Architects Declare and the RIBA 2030 Challenge. You will experience a diverse range of practical training and professional collaboration that will equip and empower you to influence the sustainability of our future project work and enrich your own career.

Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside our architectural teams to develop sustainable, low carbon and regenerative architectural strategies.
  • Support the practice in fulfilling our RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge commitments.
  • Carry out sustainable design reviews at key project stages.
  • Undertake, maintain and promote the use of environmental analysis (including energy, embodied carbon, daylight and thermal comfort) across the practice.
  • Assist with carrying out Post Occupancy Evaluation for projects post-completion.
  • Provide sustainability certification advice where applicable.
  • Assist with our CPD programme in line with RIBA curriculum.
  • Assist in activities to maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 50001 Energy Management certification.

Skills required:

  • Postgraduate degree in environmental design, architectural engineering or equivalent.
  • Architectural training preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrable experience in applying sustainable design in an architectural or engineering practice.
  • Solid understanding of UK building regulations Part L.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of leading sustainability initiatives, including (but not limited to) RIBA 2030 Challenge, LETI and Passivhaus.
  • An approachable attitude with an enthusiasm to connect with internal and external teams.
  • Confident in communicating environmental strategies in a variety of formats.
  • A commitment to continuous development and sharing of knowledge.
  • Excellent organisation, problem solving and time management skills.

Candidates should have a degree or master's in architecture and/or urban design. We are looking for someone who is passionate about urbanism, self-motivated and can work efficiently across multiple projects. Solid expertise in 2D and 3D design with CAD (preferably Microstation and Sketchup) is essential. Good working knowledge in all Creative Suite applications (Adobe CS, Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator) is important. Knowledge of GIS would be desirable.

The main focus of the role will to be provide design assistance on masterplanning projects across a wide range of geographic scales and contexts. You will also support the team with the production of presentations, reports, exhibitions and illustrations. The role will be public facing so candidates must have good communication skills as well as meticulous attention to detail.

You must have initiative and be creative, flexible and pro-active. You will be able to write clearly and concisely on architecture, design and project delivery. You will be well organised and able to work both independently and as a team player. Familiarity with Creative Suite programmes is essential. A working knowledge of Excel is also helpful.
