Blackwell is a seminal Arts and Crafts house located in the Lake District. Designed by M H Baillie Scott and built around 1900, it is a key example of his early decorative work. A restoration also adapted the house for use as a public gallery for the applied arts. Rich original colours were exposed and metalwork, stained glass, timber panelling and printed wall coverings were restored. Modest service rooms were converted to provide visitor facilities, with new elements treated as modern insertions. Externally, there is a new entrance courtyard and sunken parking area, and the planting uses wildflowers and trees featured in the internal decoration.
