The Triangle to complete Lyric Square
In west London, Hammersmith & Fulham Council has granted planning permission for a new building designed by the practice on the Triangle site facing the northern edge of Lyric Square and across from Hammersmith tube station and the famous Lyric Hammersmith theatre. Two existing office blocks will be redeveloped into a new 14 storey, 30,000 sqm building with new retail and gallery at ground floor and offices above.
Designed by Allies and Morrison for Romulus Construction, the proposals will further contribute to Hammersmith’s evolving, urban centre. This important site offers an opportunity to provide an appropriately civic and distinguished conclusion to the north side of Lyric Square. A key aim has been to reinforce the civic character of this part of Hammersmith, and strengthen its role as a gateway leading into and out of Hammersmith town centre.
The architectural language responds to the shape of the site, and the adjustments to the form and massing of the building, that each facade of the building is capable of developing its own distinct character. In order to achieve this we devised a vocabulary of components – thin horizontal floor slabs, tall panels of white terra-cotta and metal reveals to the windows – that are capable not just of accommodating the variety of elevational conditions, but of exploiting the richness they generate.
