RTPI Awards 2017 Shortlist: From Guildford to Muscat
Two projects by Allies and Morrison have been shortlisted in this year’s Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards. The masterplan for Guildford town centre and hinterland has been shortlisted for the Excellence in Plan Making Practice award, and our masterplan for Madinat al Irfan has secured a spot as a finalist for the International Award for Excellence in Planning.
For Guildford Borough Council, we identified a flexible, deliverable strategy balancing a coherent, exciting vision with pragmatic environmental and technical considerations. The masterplan builds upon previous proposals as part of the 2014 Guildford Town Vision, whilst protecting the historic town centre, opening up opportunities for new homes and commercial floorspace, creating connections with the River Wey and a new community riverside park.
For Omran, Oman’s national master developer, we created a masterplan for a new urban extension to the country’s capital, Muscat. The new low-carbon district – with a living, working and visiting population of 280,000 – will be guided by an urban design framework shaped by Oman’s considered policy of sustainable development and promotion of its cultural heritage.
The awards are an annual scheme that recognises excellence in the UK planning industry; winners will be announced on 15 June 2017. Congratulations to all shortlisted.
