New Work: Manchester Metropolitan University arts and media centre

The practice has unveiled its design for a new faculty building at Manchester Metropolitan University. Situated on the University’s All Saints campus, Allies and Morrison has been commissioned to create a new home for the Manchester School of Theatre while also providing teaching space for MMU Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences. In doing so, the project seeks to redevelop the Mabel Tylecote Building whilst delivering improvements to the public realm.

The proposals provide for 12,000 sqm of new educational, cultural and public spaces, dovetailing with the adjacent Grade II listed Grosvenor Building – the original Manchester School of Art – to create a unified university arts centre. As well as new areas for teaching, the building is being designed to encourage strong public engagement through a porous and active ground floor with many uses. These include a new Manchester Poetry Library, a cafe/restaurant, public foyers, a gallery for exhibitions and a 350-seat theatre.

Subject to planning approval, the building is to be completed by 2019.
