Recently completed: John Lewis White City

On 20th March, John Lewis opened the doors to its newest store, at Westfield White City. The flagship department store anchors the largest expansion since Westfield first opened in Shepherd’s Bush in 2008. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the textured building envelope provides a distinct expression for the John Lewis brand in what is now the largest shopping centre in Europe.

‘John Lewis’ new department store in Shepherd’s Bush is conceived as a white precast concrete and glass Palazzo responding to a complex set of conditions,’ says Alfredo Caraballo, partner, ‘it creates a new entrance to Westfield Shopping Centre, provides a key frontage to a new linear park and is a pivotal piece at the centre of the ongoing regeneration of Wood Lane.’

John Lewis is one of several projects the practice has been involved with in the changing environment of White City. These include the neighbouring White City Place, which has involved the refurbishment of buildings previously belonging to the BBC and the new Gateway building; as well as Imperial College London’s White City campus where we have designed the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub and are masterplanning the university’s north campus.
