Allies and Morrison at Gingerbread City 2019

Organised by the Museum of Architecture, the Gingerbread City 2019 exhibition opened last Saturday at Somerset House. Each year, the exhibition invites architectural practices from around London to design and build models out of edible materials. Together, all designs create an entire – gingerbread – city.

Under this year’s theme, transport, our team reimagined a fictional Victoria Sponge cake factory. Seeking diversity that comes from the particular rather than the exceptional, their approach re-iced and re-fitted the existing structure, keeping the fine grain character of the site as flights of pretzel steps, ramps of sweets and strawberry lace wires introduce new routes to and along the waterside. The ‘Fruitcake Club’ on the site generates energy from the dancing of the Gingerbread citizens.

Gingerbread City is on view at Somerset House until 5 January 2020. For more information visit the event website.
