AJ Retrofit 2017: Oxford Quads and a Modernist landmark

Two recent Allies and Morrison projects have been shortlisted for this year’s AJ Retrofit Awards, which celebrate work that prolongs the life of the built environment.

St Peter’s College has been shortlisted in the Higher and Further Education category. The College incorporates a collection of buildings, some of which originate from the 18th Century, with more recent structures emerging in the time since, most recently in the 1970’s. Through a series of subtle interventions, Allies and Morrison’s input has been to sensitively establish synergy between the traditional buildings and more recent ones, as well as creating a common ground for the variety of buildings and students that encounter one another in this area.

The Design Museum has been shortlisted in the Cultural Buildings category. Moving from its home in Shad Thames, the Museum has recently taken up its new home in the former Commonwealth Institute created in the 1960’s, which features an elegant and distinctive parabola style roof. As part of a collaboration, Allies and Morrison, OMA and John Pawson undertook an effective restoration and renovation of the existing Grade II Listed landmark. Facades have been replaced to comply with 21st Century building regulations, glazing has been redesigned to retain the original pattern and the blue-glass exterior, and new interior galleries incorporate key elements of the original structure.
