2018 Lecture Series – inspiring conversations

Last week, the practice kicked off its newest studio lecture series. This year, we have invited a group of leaders in the built environment to share their inspiring stories with our studio.

Our first speaker was Laura Lee, Chief Executive of Maggie’s Centres. Since its earliest days, Laura has overseen the growth and success of the Maggie’s charity, putting architecture at the heart of its agenda. Originally a cancer nurse, Laura has immersed herself in the world of design as a healing medium.

She shared with us various examples of the places Maggie’s have commissioned where people living with cancer can access emotional and psychological support in relaxed, beautiful and uplifting environments. Following her presentation, there was a Q&A session with the studio in which various topics – from the briefing process for the centres to Maggie’s plans for future locations, from the role of landscape in many of the centres to the need to re-asses the role of design in the wider field of medicine.

Future speakers in the series will be Cathy Hawley (Architect, Citizens Design Bureau), Michèle Dix (Managing Director, Crossrail 2), Sowmya Parthasarathy (Associate Director, Arup), Yana Peel (CEO, Serpentine Galleries), Mary Duggan (Architect, Mary Duggan Architects), Eleanor Fawcett (Head of Design, Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation), Eva Franch i Gilabert (incoming Director, The Architectural Association) and our own Di Haigh and Hazel McGregor.
