Co-design at Fosters Estate: a sustainable, responsive and inclusive approach

Built in the 1960s, Hendon’s Fosters Estate is in many ways typical of council-built housing estates from that period. Following an open competition in 2017, Allies and Morrison was appointed to develop proposals for the London Borough of Barnet to improve the estate and introduce additional housing with the informed and meaningful participation of the community who live and work there.

Expanding the Roundhouse

The Roundhouse, one of the world’s best-known performance venues, unveiled last week its plans for expansion. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the expansion will bring together a new Centre for Creative and Digital Entrepreneurs, a music wing for recording and live broadcast, a triple-height studio for experimental theatre and performing arts, breakout spaces for collaboration and a year-round outdoor bar.

Stratford Waterfront at East Bank

Sadiq Kahn, the Mayor of London, unveiled today his vision for East Bank, the largest cultural investment in London since the 1950s. At the heart of East Bank is Stratford Waterfront, a new terrace of cultural and educational buildings designed by a team of Allies and Morrison with O’Donnell + Toumey, Camps Felip Arquitecturia and LDA Design. It will bring together a new home for the London College of Fashion – uniting its six London locations in one; Sadler’s Wells East – a new dance and performance venue; V&A East – a gallery with content co-curated with the Smithsonian Institution; and a new home for BBC Music.

Into the Wild, a collaboration with Dulwich Picture Gallery and Southwark Schools

2018 marks our third year in partnership with Dulwich Picture Gallery's Drawing in Schools programme. This year, students responded to David Milne: Modern Painting, a retrospective held at the Gallery this spring. The exhibition showcased the Canadian painter's oeuvre including a series of works completed during a period of intense experimentation when he immersed himself in nature and lived in the woods painting landscapes with a modernist bent.

New work: Canada Water Masterplan

British Land has submitted the planning application for a new urban centre at the heart of southeast London’s Rotherhithe Peninsula. Designed by a team led by Allies and Morrison, the Canada Water masterplan will guide the development of a new piece of city which makes the most of the site’s dockside setting and connections to the rest of London.

New Tunbridge Wells Theatre and Civic Centre

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has approved plans for a new Theatre and Council Office designed by Allies and Morrison. Located at the heart of Tunbridge Wells, and forming a new entrance to Calverley Grounds, the historic valley first laid out by Decimus Burton, the project aims to reinvigorate the cultural life of the town and wider area, and give the town and Borough Council much needed new office space.

In Friargate, a new home for Coventry City Council

One Friargate, the first completed building of our Friargate masterplan, has won the Best Corporate Workplace at this year's Midlands and Central England BCO Awards. Facing the new Station Square, the building has an important urban function as a marker in the city, welcoming visitors to Coventry by rail and anchoring its newest urban quarter.

100 Bishopsgate topping out ceremony

After many years of hard work, 100 Bishopsgate topped out last week. The 40 storey, 181 metre tall building's profile is now firmly set on the City skyline. The building's contrasting facade textures and gently twisting form are now clearly in view as the cladding begins to make its way to the top.

Tomorrow’s workplace: refurbishment, recycling and reinvention

The Westworks has been Highly Commended at this year’s British Council of Offices (BCO) London Awards. Its refurbishment, designed by Allies and Morrison, involved a detailed re-evaluation of the mostly cellularised and unloved ‘White City One’ - the 1980s headquarters, built for the BBC as a single occupier.

Living and learning: Keybridge House and Wyvil Primary School

Lambeth Council has recently granted planning permission for the second phase of Keybridge House in Vauxhall, London. It incorporates a hybrid of uses with 125 new homes and an expansion to the Wyvil Road Primary School, providing 360 more school places to accommodate the growing community with twelve classrooms, indoor and outdoor playspaces.

Recently completed: John Lewis White City

On 20th March, John Lewis opened the doors to its newest store, at Westfield White City. The flagship department store anchors the largest expansion since Westfield first opened in Shepherd’s Bush in 2008. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the textured building envelope provides a distinct expression for the John Lewis brand in what is now the largest shopping centre in Europe.

Integrating new homes into the fabric of Tottenham

The London Borough of Haringey has granted reserved matters approval to a project designed by Allies and Morrison for Newlon Housing Trust that will provide 54 new affordable rent homes in Tottenham Hale. In addition to delivering much needed affordable housing, the scheme is an exemplar for urban intensification in London, making the most of a relatively tight, though well connected, site.

Bankside renaissance: Completing Lavington Street

Southwark Council has granted planning permission to 25 Lavington Street, a major redevelopment site just behind our studios. Occupying the current location of Lavington House, our proposals seek to create a compact urban development consisting of three new residential buildings and an office building around a new public space.

Plans unveiled for York Central

Plans have been unveiled for York Central, a large brownfield site to the west of York’s Railway Station. The area is the focus of a major redevelopment project which will deliver up to 2,500 new homes, and up to 100,000 sqm of office, leisure, cultural and retail uses. A multidisciplinary team of Arup, Allies and Morrison and Gustafson Porter + Bowman was appointed in 2016 to masterplan the development on behalf of the York Central Partnership (comprising City of York Council, Network Rail, Homes England and the National Railway Museum).

Recently Completed: One Paved Court

Paved Court is a modest lane of mostly early Georgian shops and houses sites immediately off Richmond Green, in south-west London. One Paved Court, the earliest building in the street and until recently a carpet shop, has now been transformed into a small artists' gallery and studios.

Urban picturesque: Keybridge House emerging

Last week, the distinctive rooftop ‘houses’ at Keybridge House came into view, their pitched white forms striking against the sky. Clad in white glazed terracotta they sit atop 6-storey red brick apartment buildings and are the latest addition to the development, which is currently onsite.

A high performance graduate campus in Cambridge

Planning permission has been granted for two new buildings designed by Allies and Morrison for King's College, Cambridge, as part of a new unified graduate campus on Cranmer Road, a short walk from the College's historic courts. The development will bring together, in one place, all of King's graduate accommodation, transforming a series of individual hostels into a cohesive campus around a shared garden.

The Architect's house is among the most enduring and appealing of building typologies, offering the designer the opportunity to literally bring their home to work and skills. The Grade I-listed Clandon Park, near Guildford, Surrey, designed by Giacomo Leoni (c1686-1746) was one of Britain’s finest examples of Palladian architecture before it was badly damaged by fire in 2015. In spring 2017 the National Trust launched a design competition for its rebuilding and re-imagination.

A sacred landscape: the Msheireb Prayer Ground

Allies and Morrison’s design for the Eid prayer ground at Msheireb Downtown Doha has won a highly coveted award for religious architecture. The project has received the 2017 Faith & Form International Award for Sacred Landscape. The Sacred Landscape Award is intended to recognise the use of landscape and man-made materials to create outdoor environments conducive to prayer, meditation, or transcendence.

Camden Goods Yard: A polychrome piece of London

Camden Council granted planning permission to Camden Goods Yard at the end of November, voting unanimously in favour of the scheme. The extensive development reinvents an existing Morrisons supermarket and car park on Chalk Farm Road and in close proximity to the Roundhouse and Camden Locks.

Oxford Westgate opens its doors

The much anticipated renovation and expansion of Oxford's Westgate Centre opened its doors to the public. A retail-led, mixed-use development in Oxford's historic city centre, the project has involved an extensive overhaul and replacement of a 1970s era shopping centre. Now rebranded Oxford Westgate, Allies and Morrison worked collaboratively with masterplanners BDP, to bring new life to the 5.6 ha site.

The Westworks: extending the life of a building

The Westworks - the latest building at White City Place to be re-imagined by Allies and Morrison opens its doors this month. Masterplanning Filton Airfield’s future

Long synonymous with aerospace innovation, Filton Airfield is famously where Concorde and the Corps in the First World War and RAF Spitfires in the Second and had been an important site for aircraft production in the decades following. Retrofitting a great British building

In converting the Commonwealth Institute into the new home of the Design Museum, a team of architects, engineers and conservation specialists were enlisted to bring back to life a listed work of Johnson-Marshall and Partners, an early 1960s Modernist landmark which had long stood empty. Their work was recognised last month with an AJ Retrofit Award, taking the prize in the Cultural Buildings category.

New appointment: Future Shoreditch

Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners has recently been appointed by the London Borough of Hackney to help formulate a new planning strategy for Shoreditch. The practice will support the council’s development of an Area Action Plan (AAP) – Future Shoreditch --- which will guide and manage development and investment in the neighbourhood. The work will set out a vision of what Shoreditch will look like in 2034.

Brick Awards 2017: tall brick buildings

The practice’s work on two tall buildings at Aldgate Place, at the western gateway of the Whitechapel Road, has been shortlisted for this year’s Brick Awards. Selected for the Tall Buildings category, the project’s first two buildings, 26 and 22 storeys tall respectively, opened earlier this year. The towers read as part of the same family, sharing an architectural palette of dusty grey black brick.

Ying Yang: Three architects design housing system for new arrivals

A team of three designers, two of whom are with Allies and Morrison, has designed a prototype for temporary housing for homeless migrants. Our Sofia de los Rios and Constantino Baranda teamed up with Adrian Feige of Populous to devise an ingenious system that provides dignity and comfort for residents. Their entry, Ying Yang!, came in second place out of 21 entries.

Goodluck Hope: a new riverside neighbourhood

Taking shape within the docklands riverside in east London is Goodluck Hope, a new neighbourhood which will provide more than 800 new homes within the setting of the Leamouth and North Greenwich peninsulas. Once an area of intense industrial activity, this site in particular had been an important location for ship building and remnants of this industrial past remain in place, leaving a distinctly maritime legacy. It is adjacent to the eclectic Trinity Bouy Wharf which includes London’s only lighthouse. This rich heritage has shaped the architectural response today.
