New Work: Barking and Dagenham Characterisation study 2017

Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners were commissioned by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to work on a characterisation study for the borough. Barking and Dagenham is poised for significant growth, with potential for 50,000 new homes and more than 20,000 new jobs. Such a significant scale of development will have a transformative effect on the borough, physically but also socially and economically. The purpose of the characterisation study is to ensure that future spatial strategies and masterplans are informed by a detailed understanding of the borough – an appreciation of the qualities that have helped to create successful places in the past and characteristics that may have prevented this.

The Characterisation study draws out the physical, social and functional character of the borough, and through consultation with local residents, sets out key recommendations for future development and investment.
