Simon Smith Building
Brighton College
Brighton College is one of the most successful co-educational independant schools in the country and this project provides new academic and leisure accommodation as part of a new building programme to improve facilities for students. Two interconnected blocks are placed to create a new courtyard space which is linked to the school's Front Quadrangle by amphitheatre-like steps and animated by a new internet cafe. The two upper floors contain classrooms and offices.
A dramatic roof-lit stair space provides clear circulation and a new health centre occupies a small infill site in a discrete block which completes the street frontage of Woolton Quadrangle and the adjacent original dormitory buildings by George Gilbert Scott.
