College of Art and Design
Chelsea, London
Occupying the site of the former Royal Army Medical College on Millbank, this project creates a new unified campus for Chelsea College of Art and Design adjacent to Tate Britain.
The colonisation of the existing buildings exploits their intrinsic robustness to accommodate looms, easels and printmaking tables in a series of linked rooms. The new buildings extend these and also reorganise circulation routes, repairing the site’s relationship with its context. A new pavilion building with translucent walls provides day-lit painting studios in a previously under-used courtyard, part of a series of new public spaces which allow this group of buildings to thrive as a coherent college community.
