Faculty of English
University of Cambridge
A key part of Allies and Morrison’s masterplan for Cambridge University’s Sidgwick site, the new English faculty forms three sides of a west-facing courtyard containing a garden and terrace. The library, cafe and circulation to the main lecture rooms all face onto the garden at ground floor level, while above them rise three floors of academic and administrative offices.
The three-metre module of the academic’s study dominates the composition and scale of the facades which are clad in a modular system of terracotta panels and natural anodised aluminium glazing. The building sets back at its entrance to accommodate an existing, protected, holm oak tree.
