Abbey Mills Pumping Station
London
Part of the existing sewerage and pumping complex at Abbey Mills, this new building raises the level of incoming sewage by 12 metres to that it can continue on its route east towards the processing plant at Beckton. Operational requirements determine the linear and symmetrical nature of the building which straddles the direction of the sewage flow.
Above ground, the steel structure encloses a cathedral-like space which houses the mechanical and electrical equipment and provides full access to the pumping chambers which lie deep below ground. Clad in zinc-coated aluminium panels and louvres, the building stands like a temple within its open, semi-industrial setting.
