Tate Britain
London
The new landscape at Tate Britain preserves its historic context while transforming the scope and quality of its surrounding public spaces.
To the western side, a major new entrance takes the form of a six-metre-wide incision in the ground, creating a generous stone stair on one side, and a ramp on the other. The edge of the cut is faced in a continuous ribbon of translucent glass, illuminated at night. To the front, a contemporary landscape of lawns and seasonal planting beds creates a calm frontispiece to the existing buildings while strengthening connections between the wings and providing integrated wheelchair access.
