WATERSIDE II, ROYAL ARSENAL

Woolwich, London

Waterside II sites on the south bank of the River Thames in the north-east corner of the practice’s wider masterplan for the Warren site at Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. A total of 562 new apartments are accommodated within three linear buildings, all orientated in a north-south direction to maximise daylight into the apartments and views out towards the river. The three buildings differ in height, rising from 16 storeys next to Royal Arsenal Gardens.

In contrast to the heavy masonry buildings within Royal Arsenal the Waterside II blocks have a lighter appearance. Each building has a pre-cast stone frame which establishes an intermediate scale between the overall building form and the individual apartments. The north and south elevations are highly glazed and incorporate long balconies. The east and west elevations are more solid and made from a ‘kit of parts’ (glass, metal and terracotta) which wit within the precast stone frame.
