THE FINLAY BUILDING

Merton College, Oxford

Inserted between a series of medieval structures, the Finlay Building creates a new courtyard opposite the main entrance to Merton College. The new building contains office, meeting and archive spaces, the latter located in an extensive basement which follows the line of the new structure.

Facades are a combination of irregular coursed freestone under the building’s pitched roof section and smooth-faced ashlar where the flat-roofed element abuts the wall of the medieval tennis court. The casement windows are made of oak with stainless steel linings to the reveals.
