STUDENTS' UNION EXTENSION

Southampton University

Sited at the heart of Sir Basil Spence’s 1960s campus, this new pavilion houses the Students’ Union shop and three smaller retail units. Its setting reinforces the existing network of pedestrian routes, forming a new square in front of the existing Students’ Union and marking the southern edge of the University’s central green.

The double-height portico becomes a new focus for activities associated with the new square and gives the Union entrance an appropriate prominence. The upper floor is punctuated by three large openings whose shutters fold out in summer to allow natural ventilation of the roof-lit top floor gallery.
