We were awarded joint first prize, along with three other practices, in the international ideas competition for Helsinki South Harbour. The competition, launched in May 2011 as part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme, asked entrants to create a comprehensive ideas plan to integrate the 23 hectare South Harbour into the city. The 200+ entries were made available to view and comment on online over a 6 month period and the 1200+ comments were used to inform the judging process.
Our scheme ‘Embracing the Sea’ focuses on creating an animated public realm in the inner harbour whilst increasing density at the edges. Two public buildings act as bookends to the harbour, while a new canal extends the accessible waterfront. Three new office buildings define an arrival square from the existing ferry terminal and create a gateway to a park.
