SIMON SMITH BUILDING

Brighton College

Brighton College is one of the most respected co-educational independent schools in England and this project provides new academic and recreational accommodation as part of a new building programme to improve facilities for students. The new building defines the western edge of a previously ramshackle courtyard space which is stepped to link it with the school’s principal quadrangle. This creates a natural amphitheatre which is used for informal seating, teaching and performances.

A ground floor student common room, refectory and internet cafe open onto the courtyard, while the upper levels provide staff facilities, a senior common room and a boardroom.

A dramatic roof-lit space joins the new building to its neighbour, a listed flint and brick dormitory, while its external cladding, pale stone-coloured terracotta, extends the decorative faience detailing of the main quadrangle.
