NOUVEL, ROYAL ARSENAL

Woolwich, London

Berkeley Homes appointed Allies and Morrison in 2011 to prepare a detailed planning application for a bespoke residential building within the practice’s wider masterplan for the Warren at Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.

Located on the western edge of the Arsenal and the eastern fringe of Woolwich Park, the four-storey linear building rises to a ten-storey tower next to the waterfront providing breathtaking views over the river Thames.

Nouvel has a key role in the transition from the listed buildings in the Royal Arsenal and the grander scale of the residential buildings within the Warren masterplan. The visually robust design of the heavy masonry elevations responds to the architectural heritage of the Arsenal and the grandeur of the former Royal Military Academy. The building’s appearance is rationalised by a restrained palette of materials and simple architecture details.

The building was granted planning consent in 2013 and completed on site in February 2016.
