KASUPE TRAINING CENTRE

Kasungu, Malawi

The MicroLoan Foundation’s Kasupe Training Centre is situated in Kasung, Malawi. A microfinance charity, Microloan operates centres across Malawi, making small business loans to women. The charity intend to make a difference by offering people a hand up, as opposed to a hand out, enabling them to be independent from aid and helping them to create sustainable and commercially successful businesses. Our scheme, designed pro bono for the charity, offers the MicroLoan Foundation its first purpose-built training centre to further assist recipients of the loans by providing business support and vocational training.

The new centre sits adjacent to MicroLoan’s existing headquarters, creating a welcoming public entrance to the charity’s much-visited home base. It is simple in form, housing four 55 sqm classrooms entered from an open colonnade along the front of the building. This colonnade is inspired by the porches, or ‘khondes’, typically found in local architecture. It offers shade from the sun and, as such, acts as a gathering space and place for social interaction. A break in the facade creates a hub around a central kitchen. Wherever possible, we have specified local materials, including tiles and bricks sourced from nearby Lake Malawi.
