KING'S COLLEGE HOSPITAL

London

The brief was to design a new hospital building that supplements the existing hospital facilities by providing further diagnostic and treatment facilities, a day surgery, outpatient services/departments including examination and consulting rooms, a new reception/check-in area and 500 additional parking spaces at basement level. Facilities were to include a minimum of 12-day surgery operating theatres, a minor procedure theatre, consulting rooms, 60 in-patient bedrooms and 20 hotel rooms. The challenges were to design a building that has maximum flexibility to allow for future change. It was to be publicly accessible and contribute to the community and it was to be designed to be flexible enough to be both a stand alone facility but also provide extension capacity in connection with other clinical facilities.

The design centred around a new entrance area within a covered atrium space containing the main reception and check-in area for both the existing hospital buildings and the new Normanby building. This new central concourse is also linked to the basement car park and extended as a patient’s concourse underneath a new hospital garden linking the new building and the existing clinical buildings beyond. A new hospital garden was designed at the centre of the campus acting as a focal point to staff, patients and visitors alike and offering an area for retreat and therapy.
