INTERNATIONAL ARTS & CRAFTS

Victoria & Albert Museum

The exhibition focused on craftsmanship and the ideas behind Arts and Crafts architecture and design, with over 300 objects on display. Allies and Morrison worked closely with the curatorial team at the V&A to establish a narrative structure which was developed in parallel with an architectural framework for the exhibition.

A series of spaces was established within each of the galleries, defined by strong architectural elements – thick joinery walls. These walls were the common thread which bound the exhibition together as the visitor moved between the galleries. Influenced by Arts and Crafts domestic interiors, visitors moved through spaces bound together by carefully contrived axial links. Display cases were built into these walls to create simple frameless glazed ‘hole in the wall’ display. All detailing was simple yet precise.
