OLD MARKET

Hereford

Allies and Morrison has designed a scheme to redevelop Hereford’s Old Livestock Market. The project, for developer Stanhope, sensitively extends the medieval urban structure of Hereford delivering new streets, spaces and buildings of an appropriate size and scale. The new quarter, designed by Allies and Morrison and Leslie Jones Architects, includes a six screen cinema, a food store, department store and a number of high quality retailers and restaurants serviced by a new city car park.

It also incorporates the transformation of the A49 trunk road, Newmarket Street, including tree planting, the removal of unnecessary street clutter and the delivery of two significant pedestrian crossings. Enclosed by three pavilion buildings evocative of the sixteenth century Old House in Hereford’s High Town, the City’s Widemarsh Gate has regained some of its former status ensuring the redevelopment becomes embedded within the existing urban fabric.
