Greenwich Peninsula is one of the largest regeneration projects in London, and indeed, the whole of Europe. Situated in south-east London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and across the river Thames from Canary Wharf, the 56 ha site affords one of the largest opportunities within London to provide new housing, delivering up to 15,000 homes through high density development.
The site-wide masterplan creates a new piece of city within a former industrial area, which will exploit the Peninsula’s unique land form to create a new public realm network that can accommodate future growth and change while maximising existing public transport connections and landscape assets.
The design proposes seven distinct residential neighbourhoods serviced by new social infrastructure including schools, health services and local retail. The existing Central Park will be enlarged and enhanced to act as a focus for the new neighbourhoods, while underpinning a new sequence of parks, squares, boulevards and residential streets.
Significant infrastructure improvements will be made to the area, including new and enlarged bus stations, streamlined bus routes, a proposed additional Thames Clipper stop and new pedestrian and cycle networks, all of which will amplify the London-wide connections made possible by the existing North Greenwich Underground Station. Surrounding this new transport interchange, a central mixed-use quarter will be created providing shops, hotels, offices and leisure uses around the system of open spaces and routes. Higher densities have been concentrated around public open spaces and to public transport infrastructure.
At the northernmost point of the peninsula, Peninsula Central, a major new mixed-use hub, and a unique Design District will complete the O2 Arena incorporating creative-arts led activity at the heart of the masterplan. The wider area will comprise of a cluster of studio and incubator spaces for small and medium-sized enterprises, and extension of the existing Ravensbourne College and a world-class film studio.
