GIRTON COLLEGE MASTERPLAN

Cambridge

Allies and Morrison has now completed three projects with Girton College, all won through limited architectural competitions: the new archive building and Library refurbishment in 2005, new kitchens and conference centre in 2006, and a new student accommodation wing in Ash Court in 2013. Each project seeks to extend and reinforce – in a contemporary manner – Girton’s unique architectural language and carries a trace of Girton’s Victorian past into an environmentally sustainable 21st century.

Most recently, following the success of Ash Court, we were appointed by the College to masterplan its 33 hectare campus, to include 400 new student rooms and an auditorium among other opportunities. In common with other Cambridge Colleges, Girton College is experiencing demand for growth to accommodate increasing numbers of students. The nearby North West Cambridge and Darwin Green developments also have a bearing on the College’s long term outlook.

The College asked us to develop a masterplan vision to cover at least the next 25 years. Following a thorough internal consultation about its future, we worked very closely with the College to prepare a considered, long term strategy to make the most of their unique site culminating in an outline planning application for new development in the Green Belt. South Cambridgeshire District Council and their independent Design Enabling Panel have been highly supportive of the proposals.
