CONTEMPORARY APPLIED ARTS

Southwark, London

The second new home Allies and Morrison have designed for Contemporary Applied Arts, the country’s only cross discipline applied arts gallery, is this time on the ground floor of their recently refurbished studios on Southwark Street.

Situated within a Grade II listed former warehouse, the ground floor space has been transformed to increase natural light, improve access, and create a street presence for the gallery. The space is characterised by a series of plywood joinery units providing multiple functions – screen, display, storage etc. New materials are simple and robust which sit comfortably against the exposed fabric of the existing building.

Full-height glazing to the rear reveals views of Allies and Morrison’s model-making workshop across a secluded yet animated courtyard space.
