BLACKBURN HOUSE

Holland Park, London

The Blackburn House is a home for two art collectors. The project inserts contemporary interiors into an existing Victorian shell, forming several dramatic interventions and creating new connections and flow within the house. A sequence of architectural layers allow new linings to respect the existing moldings, establishing a character of detail appropriate to the original house.

A cantilevered pre-cast concrete stair inserted into the newly opened and widened hallway creates a continuous shaft of light through the house. Traced by a spiraling handrail, the generous stairwell opens to a terrace at the main half-landing, bringing a sense of the garden into the centre of the house.
