Manchester City Council approves MMU Arts building

Manchester City Council has granted planning permission and listed building consent for the new Arts and Humanities Building at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The project is about creating an inspirational venue of cultural encounter, which will open the University to the public and showcase its creative strengths and cultural artefacts. It will bring together a dynamic mix of conservatoire acting and drama, alongside the Manchester Poetry Library, one of the most successful creative writing schools in the country, a base for a new multimedia journalism programme with TV and radio studios as well as the University Language Centre.

The design aims to establish a unique identity for the new Arts & Humanities Building, which also carefully and sensitively considers the integration of an existing listed portico and the neighbouring Grosvenor Building, also listed. The resulting form is at once elegant and bold, which will form a focal point of this part of the campus.
