Permission granted at Filton Airfield
South Gloucestershire Council has granted outline planning permission to the redevelopment of Filton Airfield. The masterplan, prepared by a team led by Allies and Morrison, will guide the delivery of more than 2,600 new homes and a whole new town centre with schools, 26 ha of employment space, three new schools, a retail centre, community, recreational and play areas. The site, once the home of Concorde and the Bristol Brabazon, is being developed by YTL Developments UK Ltd who purchased the airfield from BAE Systems in 2016.
Located at the northern edge of Bristol, the new Filton will have a rich variety of architecture and aspires to build on the region’s thriving economy. The proposals build on traces of Filton’s aeronautical heritage and will retain existing hangars. There will be a mix of housing and neighbourhood types – including a higher density town centre with a new rail station – which will be knit together by a sequence of routes and spaces with a range of landscape characters from a central destination park to more informal parklands, allotments and community gardens. Landscape architects Grant Associates have helped to develop the overall green strategy.
