Passivtower: how tall can we go?

Over the last several months, a team within the practice has been researching the potential of tall Passivhaus buildings. Especially within the context of London, we asked ourselves the question – could high density residential offer an opportunity to upscale Passivhaus?

The outcome of this research has produced the design of a prototype 48-storey residential tower, designed entirely to the Passivhaus standard. Using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) software, we were able to design a tower which would see reductions in cooling energy demand, primary energy demand as well as a dramatic 60% reduction in glazing heat losses and 82% reduction in heat energy demand against business as usual. If realised, it would be the tallest Passivhaus building in the world.
