Into the Wild, a collaboration with Dulwich Picture Gallery and Southwark Schools
2018 marks our third year in partnership with Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Drawing in Schools programme.
This year, students responded to David Milne: Modern Painting, a retrospective held at the Gallery this spring. The exhibition showcased the Canadian painter’s oeuvre including a series of works completed during a period of intense experimentation when he immersed himself in nature and lived in the woods painting landscapes with a modernist bent. It is this period of solitude in the North American wilderness that the students engaged with for their own work.
Tutored by Jo Lewis, students from Kingsdale Foundation School and Harris Academy Bermondsey followed a creative process exploring the theme of wilderness in Milne’s work as part of their own artistic development and expression. An exhibition up now in our studios features student paintings as well as examples of their artistic process and discovery over sessions held at Dulwich Picture Gallery and Sydenham Hill Wood. The result is a collection of imaginative pieces that reflect a multiplicity of artistic identities and the encounter of nature within the urban environment.
Into the Wild is open weekdays 18 May – 10 June, 10-5pm at Allies and Morrison, 85 Southwark Street SE1 0HX.
