Girton College, Cambridge: Expansion gains consent
Girton College has secured planning permission for new student residential accommodation and ancillary meeting, office and social spaces, including a new auditorium proposed in Allies and Morrison’s masterplan for the Cambridge college. The masterplan provides Girton with the flexibility it needs to develop and grow within its 33ha northwest Cambridge site in the years ahead. It provides a framework to accommodate 400 new student rooms and an auditorium as well as increased capacity for learning, working and socialising.
The masterplan is the latest chapter in a working relationship the practice has had with Girton for a number of years, having completed the new archive building and library in 2005, new kitchens and conference centre in 2006 and a new student accommodation wing at Ash Court in 2013. Each new architectural addition carries forward Girton’s Victorian past in a contemporary manner and to high environmental standards.
