Elephant & Castle rising

Rising today in Elephant & Castle is a new 41-story building, Two Fifty One. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the new tower will form part of a mixed-use development including an adjacent seven-storey commercial building. The terrazzo clad tower will have a striking, Modern silhouette. It will offer dramatic views across central London and beyond. The project will deliver a mix of market and shared ownership homes, retail and new office space. The photo (above) taken last week shows Two Fifty One rapidly coming into its own.

In addition to our role in designing this project at the southernmost terminus of Southwark Bridge Road, the practice is also involved in the neighbouring Elephant & Castle town centre regeneration on the southwestern and eastern sites around the traffic circle itself. Working with Delancey and The University of the Arts London, plans were revealed earlier this year for a new pedestrianised town centre with a market square, 5,000 new homes, spaces for new retail, an integrated public transport hub and a new cutting-edge campus for UAL’s London College of Communication.

Homes close to the city centre, high density, walkable, well-served by rail, bus, cycle and foot – it is the kind of compact urbanism that large cities like London will need to sustainably accommodate the pressures of growth.
