Breaking new ground: Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub
Construction is now underway on the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub at Imperial College London’s new White City Campus in west London.
Designed by Allies and Morrison, the innovative new facility will bring together researchers, engineers, scientists and clinicians to research and create affordable medical technologies. Research areas will include new technologies for the early detection, monitoring and treatment of cancers; the development of minimally invasive implants; regenerative medicine and technology to aid recovery from nervous system injuries.
On hand for the groundbreaking last month was Imperial alumnus Sir Michael Uren OBE and trustees of his foundation, whose generous £40m gift has made the construction of the new building possible.
The 14-storey building will have highly flexible floorplates and energy efficient servicing. An array of vertical fins, of several different variations, will create a distinctive facade for the Hub and provide solar shading, while lending a dynamic identity to the building. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2019.
