Housing Design Awards shortlist: new homes in Bromley-by-Bow, Hounslow and Hendon

Three projects in London designed by Allies and Morrison have been shortlisted in this year’s Housing Design Awards.

Competition win at Nieuw Zuid, Antwerp

A collaborative team of DRDH and Allies and Morrison has won a competition for a 24 storey residential tower and office building in Antwerp, for leading Belgian developer Triple Living. One of two towers being commissioned, the scheme was selected in limited competition by a jury including the city architect Christian Rapp.

OPDC grants approval for more homes on Scrubs Lane

Following on from last month’s approval by the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) for new residential development at North Kensington Gate, the Corporation has now signed off on 164 more new homes designed by Allies and Morrison for Aurora Developments.

Good design is good business: Banham HQ

The practice's design for a new headquarters for Banham in southwest London has won an Architectural Record Good Design is Good Business Award. Now going for twenty years, the annual awards scheme recognises architectural schemes anywhere in the world that are of benefit to business.

Three Allies and Morrison projects have been shortlisted in this year’s RIBA London Awards: Lock Keepers in Bromley-by-Bow, the hollandgreen development (incorporating the Design Museum) in Kensington and a new building for King’s College School in Wimbledon.

Mediaworks, White City Place: recycling a building for a new future

In 2004, the BBC moved into a media and broadcasting centre designed by Allies and Morrison. The BBC Media Village buildings were designed as big, robust concrete frame buildings, convenient and flexible. Today, 13 years later, this resilience has shown true as the re-imagined White City Place, a new tech and creative hub developed by Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan. Set within burgeoning White City, the office complex is repurposing the old BBC buildings as 53,000 sqm of new speculative office accommodation

Designing new homes at Greenwich Peninsula

Greenwich Peninsula is one of the largest regeneration projects in London, and indeed, the whole of Europe. Situated in east London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and across the River Thames from Canary Wharf, it consists of seven new neighbourhoods masterplanned by Allies and Morrison. Building upon this work, the practice has recently been appointed architect for two residential components of the wider development.

In Bath, knitting retirement into a world heritage site

Bath and North East Somerset Council has granted planning permission to a new development of retirement homes designed by Allies and Morrison for PegasusLife. Situated within the Bath UNESCO World Heritage Site at the point that the Georgian city meets the River Avon, below Royal Crescent, the project offers a unique opportunity to address a growing local and national need for high quality accommodation for older people, which allows them to continue to live independently and within one's local community.

#boxity: Saturday Club Masterclass at Chelsea College of Arts

On a recent Saturday, over sixty teenagers from across London joined forces with a group of Allies and Morrison architects to build a new city. Under the banner of #boxity, the day began as a brief lecture on architecture led by Partner Artur Carulla but quickly evolved into something much more dynamic. To the students’ surprise, they were then asked to jump right into the ‘mother of all arts’ themselves by building an entire city at a scale of 1:100 with 1,500 flat-packed cardboard boxes and a lot of masking tape.
