Brick Awards 2016: Best Urban Regeneration

Allies and Morrison’s recently completed first block of new homes at West Hendon has won a Brick Award. The project took top honours in the Urban Regeneration category in the Brick Development Association’s annual programme recognising the best use of brick in new architecture. The scheme is comprised of four linked buildings, including a 26-storey tower, providing 287 homes.

Oxford Preservation Award for St Peter’s

Allies and Morrison’s work on the Linton Quad at St Peter’s College, Oxford, has won an Oxford Preservation Award. Bestowed by the Oxford Preservation Trust, the awards recognise those projects in Oxford that are ‘keeping the best of the old and encouraging the best of the new’.

Girton College, Cambridge: Expansion gains consent

Girton College has secured planning permission for new student residential accommodation and ancillary meeting, office and social spaces, including a new auditorium proposed in Allies and Morrison’s masterplan for the Cambridge college. The masterplan provides Girton with the flexibility it needs to develop and grow within its 33ha northwest Cambridge site in the years ahead. It provides a framework to accommodate 400 new student rooms and an auditorium as well as increased capacity for learning, working and socialising.

Doha architecture forum: Making and re-making the city

The Doha Architecture Forum (DAF) have invited founding partners Bob Allies and Graham Morrison to reflect on regeneration and design, exploring how cities make buildings and buildings make cities. They will present the next DAF Lecture on Wednesday, 2 November 2016.

Elephant & Castle rising

Rising today in Elephant & Castle is a new 41-story building, Two Fifty One. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the new tower will form part of a mixed-use development including an adjacent seven-storey commercial building. The terrazzo clad tower will have a striking, Modern silhouette. It will offer dramatic views across central London and beyond. The project will also deliver a mix of market and shared ownership homes, retail and new office space. The photo (above) taken last week shows Two Fifty One rapidly coming into its own.

Ideas for the Open City at Dubai Design Week

An exhibition hosted by and co-organised by Allies and Morrison was on display at last week’s Dubai Design Week. The exhibit, Ideas for the Open City, provided an overview of the Unlimited Doha Design Prize residency that took place earlier this year.
